At 12:20 PM a bridge painter reported to the state highway patrol that he had found a gray overcoat, a cane and a blue pin stripe coat lying near the north tower. Ten minutes later, the Fort Point Coast guard station responded to a call from the lime point coast guard Light Station that a body had washed ashore near the foot of the north tower. Rauhut's son-in-law, Preston Hartman of Mill Valley, said his father-in-law was in poor health and had expressed fear he was going blind. The body of a man found floating in water off Bay Farm Island Alameda yesterday was identified as Dennis Crowley, 68 an old age pensioner living as 108 Oakland Man, 75, Dies in Leap Off Bridge; Eyesight Failing A man tentatively identified as August Rauhut, 75, Spanish American War veteran of 2816 19th Avenue Oakland leaped to his death from the Golden Gate Bridge yesterday. His body was recovered within an hour after the leap by a Coast Guard crash boat. Neighbors said Rauhut had been under treatment at Highland Hospital in Oakland for some months for failing eyesight. He was seen by bridge painters wondering along the walkway shortly after noon. Later they noticed his cane, overcoat and jacket piled near the north tower and notified highway patrol men. The body was seen shortly afterwards by keepers in the Lime Point Light House and they called the coast guard.
