OLEAN - Magdalena Rauhut, of Eden Heights, formerly of Cuba, passed away peacefully Sunday (May 6, 2018).

Born Aug. 20, 1931, on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Marie Blok Winkel. At the age of two, she and her parents moved to Dusseldorf, Germany where she lived until 1964. On July 16, 1957, in Dusseldorf, she married Horst W. Rauhut, who predeceased her on Nov. 2, 2011.

In 1964, Magdalena and Horst, along with their daughters, Birgit and Monika, immigrated to the United States of America. They lived in Washington, D.C., where their son Michael was born. They also lived in Maryland and Illinois until 1973, where they settled in Cuba, in the Haskell Valley.

Magdalena had a strong, loving influence on her children, grandchildren, friends and family in North America and Europe, and on others who came in contact with her. For many years, she visited the residents of The Pines Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, organizing monthly programs. She also served in Sunday school and was active in the auxiliary of Gideons International. Her faith strengthened her during, and after, many trials of World War II and throughout her life.

Magdalena is survived by her children, Birgit (Dave) Wingard of Allegany, Monika (Ken) Harris of Cuba and Michael (Sandy) Rauhut of Carlisle, Pa.; her grandchildren, Heidi (Zec) Smith of Allegany, Melissa (Gordon) Carpenter of Olean, Katie Harris of Cuba, Hannah Rauhut of Grantham, Pa., and Jacob Rauhut of Carlisle; great-grandchildren, Kensington and Rylan Smith of Allegany; a family friend, Abate Fantaye of Alexandria Va.; and extended family in Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Germany.

Burial will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville.

ALLEGANY - Birgit Wingard, of 68 N. Fourth St., Allegany, passed away peacefully Saturday (April 20, 2019) at Olean General Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born June 12, 1959, in Dusseldorf, Germany, she was the daughter of Horst and Magdalena Winkel Rauhut. In 1964, with her parents and sister, Birgit immigrated to the United States. On Sept. 27, 2003, in Olean, she married David Wingard, who survives.

Birgit was a 1977 graduate of Hinsdale Central School. She received her nursing degree from Alfred State College, graduating in 1980.

She enjoyed a long career as a registered nurse for 39 years. She worked in Cuba, Wellsville and Rochester before moving to Tulsa, Okla. While there, in addition to her career, she attended Rhema Bible Training College. She returned to this area in 1996, and began working at the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, in Allegany, where she was the nursing supervisor over the past five years.

Birgit and her husband enjoyed eating out, traveling and going to all their family outings and activities. They were very involved with the Fresh Fire Worship Center, and helped out with children's ministry, prayer ministry and nursing home ministry.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her siblings, Monika (Ken) Harris of Cuba and Michael (Sandy) Rauhut of Carlisle, Pa.; sister-in-law, Christy DeLauney of Hagerstown, Md.; nieces and nephews, Heidi (Zec) Smith, Melissa (Gordon) Carpenter, Katie Harris, Hannah Rauhut, Jacob Rauhut and Nicholas DeLauney; and her extended family in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Germany.

She was predeceased by her parents.

Burial will be in East Portville Cemetery.
